No worries Gaz, although I was admiring your bravado at contemplating a weekend away only a week after wifey's surgery. Pop out if you can Stretch, but if you prefer to wait, I'll be at it again on May 31st.

So GO... team Whitey and will try and catch up next time.
Garry, catch u on a ride soon now that the DR is back on the road again. I still havent taken to the dirt on it yet!

No worries Stretch. It's probably best there are no witnesses anyway.

Well fans, it was a bit of a mixed bag for Team Whitey. Both myself & Kristen finished last in our heats - but that was to be expected. I was running a speedway tyre on my 19" rear which proved to be a mistake... too narrow a profile and too small nobs for the loose surface. Everyone else with MX bikes were running chunkier trials tyres on 18" rims. Not blaming the tyres... I would have finished last regardless, but it was hard work keeping the bike pointed where I wanted it to go. Kristen had a great time but was a little intimidated by the pace and the loose surface. She called it quits after two of the scheduled four races. I was extremely proud of her though, the usual two hour practice session was cut back to a few laps due to the lack of water. So, she only had only a couple of practice laps before lining up for her first ever race. It wasn't all doom and gloom by any means. I had a great time and am keen as mustard to do more. I have no doubt Kristen will be out there again too. There is a practice day scheduled for April 19th, and it will do her confidence good to have a run without worrying about racing. No action shots of me (thankfully), but here's some of Kristen...

Good stuff Graham and Kristen, you both learnt a bit and at the end of the day a smile on the dial?
Whitey a 19 inch rear thats getting serious, my eldest son now 33, when he started senior (17) Dirt track on a Methanol burning YZ490 was running 19 inch front and rear always had to get the Goodyear tyres we ran from the States, luckily we had a contact there.
Does the CRF RUN A 18 INCH STANDARD rear?

Yeah, it was all good stretch. The learning process has begun ! The CRF450R has a 19" rear standard. The enduro version, the CRF450X, has an 18". Knobbies are allowed on the front only for the seniors, and trials tyres seem to be the tyre of choice for the rear. Unfortunately, they are only available in an 18", so everyone who has an MX bike relaces their hubs to an 18" rim. I'm getting mine done before the next meet !

A quick update for all my fans. I now have 5 races under my belt, and I've had my arse handed to me in all of them - finishing half a lap behind the field in a 3 lap race My last race yesterday was red flagged after one poor guy crashed and was cleaned up by two following riders. Luckily, I was so far behind the action I was able to easily avoid the carnage (wish I'd wore a helmet cam though). I've only been competing in the 'Over 35' class to date, as I was told it was a good class to startout - gentlemen racers and all that, but fark me those guys are fast. Next meet, I'll have a crack at the 'Senior' class as well and mix it with the young immortals. Anyhow, I picked up some tips on the weekend on technique and suspension settings. All I need to do now is grow some bigger kahoonas. Second last is now my goal

So, how did junior Whitey go this time round? Gaz

Its all good practice.
From when I used to race at the back of the pack in State and National DH MTB races, The over 30 and over 35 fields were the most hard fought of the lot.
Good luck on moving up through the pack.

Good luck on moving up through the pack. The 'Over 35' class only has about 8 competitors, but they're all experienced dirt trackers. It was my first time on the long track, and my race plan was to tag onto the back of the pack and learn. After the start, I stuck with them all the way down the straight before being completely gob-smacked. They barely slow down at all before tipping into the corner. Just a light touch of the rear brake and then a power slide all the way round. It looks fast from the spectator areas but it looked insane from my perch on the bike. As you say though, practice is the key and that's why I'll enter the Seniors Class as well next round. I'm keen to improve and it's good to be back into sport after a long absence.
